5 Aggresive Viral Marketing ideas that, Apple won’t do but, will help Mac OS X adoption

At 2 days from WWDC and with fresh rumors about the new major update to Mac OS X (10.6 – Snow Leopard), here is a small list of some weird marketing ideas/events to promote Mac OS X to the masses.

The ideas/events should focus in bring a clearer idea of the advantages and capabilities of Mac OS X Leopard, here some ideas:

X Games:
Celebrated in February and March gathering worldwide attention because these games are oriented to a younger audience, the audience that follows extreme sports and buys Apple stuff. Apple should be the principal sponsor of this game selling an X Games based Ipod loaded with content from previous celebrations. ESPN is the producer, which is part of Disney and Steve Jobs is on Disney Board, so is not difficult to get content from them.

Paint with Leopard themes the 15,000 Taxis of New York for a Weekend:
Sound out of this world, but imagine a rush hour in New York and all the taxis dressed with Leopard colors advertising the next Operating System from Apple. On average you see publicity on cars from 5 seconds to 5 minutes but the picture will be much clearer if you are rounded with thousands of them. Each car has more than 750,000 impression monthly. Do the numbers.

Dress the Empire State with a BIG X:
Again what I am looking here is to put Mac OS X in front of everybody and Viral Marketing sometimes turns to be more creative and cheaper than traditional media. Apple should do whatever it takes to keep the Mac OS X momentum and put Leopard as a real alternative to the Vista flop.

Create an Leopard Cola:
Talk with Coca Cola or Pepsi to get a new cola based on Leopard and advertise it as a real product. This will correlates one of the most powerful consumer product, Coca Cola, with the most innovative system, Mac OS X. Brand recognition is very important, but Mac OS X is known within the Mac or Hackers Communities, Apple needs to let the regular Windows user knows about it.

Discover Leopard:
Buy air time in Discovery Channel creating a serie of 5 minute infomercials oriented to explain the advantages of the new system. See this, every 30 minutes, Discovery Channel broadcasts a technology based mini program that provides easy to use tips of what to do with Leopard.

Mac OS X Lite is a new version with limited functions and with a 30 days use period created to be given away to any pc user that buy an ipod or any ipod related stuff at Best Buys, Target or Circuit City. The idea is give users the possibility of test drive the new Mac OS X Leopard in its own machine (PC) parallel to Windows.

This is a Guerrilla marketing that will put OS X in front of millions of pc users that want to try the system, but consider the cost of the mac too expensive, the user will feel how smooth Leopard works compare to Windows and test drive any feature for a limited time (30 days), after the set date the system will be useless and will uninstall itself, in theory it may works without any problem, I have seen OS X running in intel PCs (PC Hardware) and it runs perfectly, even Final Cut Pro and Photoshop CS3, so Apple has the chance here.

Giving away a test version of Leopard will put Apple in the face of Millions new users and the possibility that some of them jump to the Mac bandwagon are bigger than Apple can achieve without promoting OS X the way it deserves.

There will be some hardware problems, nothing new to Windows users, but Apple can streamlined the installation process and create generic drivers to specific devices, Apple can, you know.

Web 2.0 startup PimpMyNews.com announced today at Macworld the debut of the world’s first “talking social news application” designed specifically for iPhones and iPod touch devices. The application has received Apple’s prestigious “Staff Pick” designation and can now be accessed from any iPhone or iPod touch at www.PimpMyNews.com/m or through Apple’s web app directory.

The PimpMyNews web app features key functionality from the PimpMyNews full site, which launched in December at www.PimpMyNews.com. The web app scours the Internet for breaking text stories from the most popular news and blog sites and converts them to near-human sounding audio that users of iPhones, iPod touch devices and other mobile devices can listen to wherever they happen to be. Macworld Conference & Expo, Californian based hardware manufacturer Axiotron has announced that the much anticipated Mobdbook™ tablet Mac solution is now available to consumers. Recently designated as an Apple-authorized product, the ModBook is the only Mac-based tablet computer on the market and comes pre-installed with Mac OS X Leopard™ and Inkwell® handwriting recognition software. Featuring a durable aircraft quality magnesium alloy structure, the 13.3″ widescreen tablet incorporates Wacom® digitized pen-sensitive hardware with 512 levels of pressure sensitivity for responsive, intuitive onscreen writing and drawing, plus an in-built iSight® camera, a 2.0 GHz or 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, integrated 24x DVD Combo drive or 8x DVD SuperDrive and Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality.
The ModBook is essentially an after-market hardware modification to standard off-the-shelf Apple® MacBook™ systems that has been transformed into tablet form. As well as supporting direct on-screen drawing and handwriting recognition, the system enhances keyboard-less control through gesture recognition tailored to Mac applications with its pen-system (which requires no batteries) capable of 133 position updates per second. The ModBook Digitizer Pen also features 2 programmable side buttons, an eraser and three different types of replaceable pen nibs (Pencil, Studio and Felt) that offer a variety of drawing styles and sensations. The radio-based digitizer technology also enables users to write while their hand is resting on the screen and the pen can be used like a mouse to control the when hovering above the surface of the tablet.
The display screen itself features an anti-reflective coating on the inside for increased light transmission and image brightness and the outside is acid treated to achieve an etched surface to deliver sharp, paper-like writing.
The Modbook also retains the stylistic traits associated with Mac laptops. Aircraft quality magnesium alloy used for both the top shell and the interior display frame and the top shell is plated with chrome over a set of copper and nickel layers for scratch-resistantance and protection against oxidation and is available in standard satin or optional mirror finish. The wide viewing angle LCD panel (Horiz./Vert.: 100°/90° vs. 90°/55°) and iSight camera are also given replaceable covers made from Axiotron’s chemically strengthened ForceGlass™. The LCD panel also retains the same resolution (1280×800 pixel) and aspect ratio (113 ppi) of the original MacBook™ display.
The Modbook is also the only portable Mac solution with built-in GPS functionality which is based on the SiRFstarTM III chipset.
The integrated CD/DVD combo drive that can be upgraded to a 8.5 GB DVD burner and other noteable features include built in 802.11 a/b/g/n capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0 and locking points designed into the magnesium top shell.
The Modbook is now on sale in the United States and Canada at an MRP of USD$2,290. Axiotron will showcase the Modbook at the upcoming Macworld Expo 2008 with mini-seminars to be conducted by renowned comic book artist Kody Chamberlain, Emmy award-winning animator Shannon Tindle, award-winning photographer Caesar Lima, acclaimed architectural designer Matthew Brewster and Cal State Fullerton design professor Bryan Cantley.

Apple to launch new laptop at Macworld 2008

Apple recently hosted a holiday party, likely a company party like most companies do. Apple invited a best-selling iTunes artist to perform, because Apple can do that. The artist (or artists) were then each promised that, beyond being paid, they’d each be receiving a new Apple laptop that is to be announced at Macworld in January.

I’m having a hard time pinning down who played, but this does mean, if true, that we are getting new laptops at Macworld, and since they’re giving them away as gifts in Cupertino, they’re likely the inexpensive sub-notebooks we’ve been hearing about. We hope so.

What gift do you give the Linux nut who has everything? Why, a programmable Linux mascot droid that spins around on its rump, that’s what.The ersatz felt-covered Tux is wireless and radio-controlled, courtesy of a fish-styled IR pick up and 2.4GHz transmitter unit that plugs into a spare USB port on your PC. He talks and is capable of relaying VoIP conversations and reading out RSS feeds.

Not enough? His arms flap and his eyes light up. Oh, the hours of pleasure to be had from this one, Still not enough? Then use the bundled software – open source, natch – and your coding skills to get him working on whatever tasks you see fit.

And for one here’s a product the not only works with Linux but only works with Linux. Mac and Windows can clear off out of it – they’re not wanted here.

Some German Apple fans get iPhone at midnight

Reuters is reporting that “hundreds” of Apple fans braved rain and wind in the Germany last night to be the first folk in Europe to officially get their hands on the iPhone.

A few hundred people lined up at special opening of a T-Mobile shop in Cologne to buy the device at midnight before the phone goes on sale across the country later in the day.

T-Mobile staff gave out blankets, umbrellas hot drinks and food as the queue grew and the eager customers where cheered and applauded by sales staff when they entered the store.

T-Mobile would not discuss how many units it expected to shift as it launches in Germany, nor stock levels, saying only: “We have plenty.”

Here in the UK, the first iQueuers arrived at 8.30am at Apple’s Regent Street Store for a long, cold, night’s wait for the Apple mobile.

Sierra releases Apex USB HSUPA modem

Kicking off the release of a new series of adapters, Sierra Wireless today unveiled the Apex 880. The USB adapter is smaller and sleeker than earlier AirCard devices but manages to support a full HSUPA connection; users on AT&T’s upcoming network and other carriers can download as quickly as 7.2Mbps in peak conditions but also upload at 2Mbps when supported. This and normal HSPA work on all three supporting bands across the world; legacy EDGE and GPRS support four bands for wider roaming. The modem joins the latest generation of these modems and includes a microSD slot to shuttle information from a cellphone or between computers without requiring a second adapter. Additional built-in storage contains the drivers needed to install the device and will install themselves the first time the Apex is plugged in. Mac OS X, Windows 2000, and later systems are supported out of the box for the Apex, which is expected to ship by January but whose price will likely depend on individual carriers and their service plans.
